A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in caring for patients while they are in the hospital. They are board-certified in internal medicine and rarely see patients outside the hospital so they are able to give their complete attention to patients in the hospital setting. Who is on the hospitalist team?
In addition to physicians, the hospitalist team may include physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practioners (NPs). They are available around-the-clock to provide care to patients in the hospital. The Carson City Hospital hospitalist team also utilizes the services of the health care professionals in nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy and discharge planning.

Patients of local physicians and medical groups who have decided to use the hospitalist service.
Patients who do not have a local or primary care physician.
How does the hospitalist know about me?
Hospitalists communicate with both your primary care physicians and specialists throughout your hospital stay. The hospitalist will obtain any information they need to better care for you from your primary care physician. Carson City Hospital’s hospitalists also have access to many patients’ records via the Carson Health Network medical record system. During the course of your hospitalization, your hospitalist and primary care physician may talk further regarding your treatment. At discharge, your hospitalist will communicate with your primary care physician to discuss your further treatment needs, help arrange follow-up care, and prescribe the necessary medication, and he or she will send your hospital records to your primary care physician.
What are the advantages of being cared for by a hospitalist?
Hospitalists work only in the hospital and are available 24 hours per day.
Hospitalists are easily accessible in emergencies and when questions or concerns arise.
Hospitalists are very familiar with the hospital procedures and processes at Carson City Hospital. This allows them to function efficiently when ordering tests, consulting other specialists and adjusting treatments.
Knowing their hospitalized patients are under expert care, primary care physicians are able to spend more uninterrupted time caring for their office-based patients.
How does my hospitalist work with my doctor?
When will I see my primary care physician?
Your primary care physician may visit you while you are in the hospital. However, it is more common that you will see your primary care physician after you are discharged from the hospital.
